About me

Bolyky Zoltán karmester

I was born in Budapest in 1980, in a family of musicians.

I started my violin studies at the age of 5 and my piano studies at the age of 8. It was during my studies at the music school that I experienced what it was like to play in an orchestra, and these experiences were decisive regarding my career choices.

After graduating from the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Music I continued my violin studies at the Budapest Academy of Music, and later I enrolled for the orchestral conducting programme as a student of Tamás Gál and András Ligeti. In 2005 I earned a degree in violin performance and music education, and in 2007 a degree in orchestral conducting.

I took part in the violin masterclasses of András Ágoston, Dénes Zsigmondy, Nelly Söreghy-Wunderlich and the Vienna Brahms Trio. I had the possibility to expand my knowledge at the conducting courses of Salvador Mas Conde, Michael Dittrich, Zoltán Peskó, Marco Zambelli and Carlo Caputo; and my experience gained from playing in different orchestras also proved to be fruitful for my conducting studies.

During my university studies I was the leader of the Musica Sonora Chamber Orchestra, and later I was assigned to lead the Chamber Orchestra of the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Music.

I was in charge of the symphony orchestra of the conservatory from 2007 to 2014. In 2009 under my direction the symphony orchestra of the conservatory won the first place at the National Competition for Symphony Orchestras of Secondary Schools of Music, and I received a Special Prize to the Best Conductor from the Jury.

For 3 years (from 2009) I was permanent guest conductor of the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra. Besides performing symphonies and oratorios I also directed and conducted a lot of shortened staged operas for young audiences.

In 2010 I was invited to lead the Divertimento Chamber Orchestra. We continuously strive to expand our repertoire and offer many young soloists the possibility for a debut. This mindset was vital when I was engaged to conduct the orchestra in the gala concerts featuring the young artists of the Virtuosos classical music talent show as soloists.

I have also been leading the symphony orchestra and chamber orchestra of the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen, and I work regularly as répétiteur with the students of the Vocal Studies Department. This cooperation within the Faculty of Music led to the performance of different operas and oratorios under my direction: the most recent one (in 2022) was the premiere in Debrecen of the oratorio „Passion in Hungarian language” by György Orbán, a contemporary composer.

This year I was also invited by the JAMK Universitiy of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä, Finland to give a masterclass in orchestral conducting.

I also direct the work of the Kodály Zoltán World Youth Orchestra with Tamás Vásáry, internationally renowned pianist and conductor. In July 2022 the ensemble will go on tour and perform pieces by Khachaturian, Kodály and Tchaikovsky.

My main goal is to ensure a motivating, engaging and workshop-like atmosphere during the rehearsals in order to create the prerequisites of a performance of the highest possible artistic quality.
